As soon as the media breaks a story about a breach in data marketing and identity theft insurance ads pop up quickly. There are countless stories and press releases about this happening. The FTC has published a good press release about what to watch for in the advertising of identity theft insurance companies.

Most people don’t know that there are laws that protect consumers from these crimes. If so, there are enough remedies available to you that won’t require you to hire someone else to do these things, at least if you don’t really mind doing most of the legwork to protect yourself against identity theft.

Identify theft insurance is typically provided at cheap premium amounts. I’m not currently enrolled in a service, but if you are very concerned about safety you might want to consider this.

Our Federal Trade Commission claims that restoring a stolen identity may consume close to 200 man-hours. How much time in a day do you have left over for this activity as well as your full time employment, caring for you family and any other task that you need to do in life? If you have identity theft happen to you, no identity theft insurance company will want to help you. You should take every precaution to prevent identity theft; but if you’re already a victim it’s too late for prevention, and these companies probably won’t help you out after the fact.
